WILLIAMSON – The Burch Bulldogs were crowned 2016 Mingo County Champions in soccer action this past Saturday. The tourney was played at historic Lefty Hamilton Park in Williamson.
Burch defeated a tough Lenore Ranger team 6-0, led by Tucker Wellman who had five goals. Ethan Evans scored one goal for the Bulldogs in the contest. The Burch coaches praised the defensive effort of their squad. Goalkeeper Taylor Wellman had double digit saves in an outstanding performance.
Lenore defeated the Williamson Wolfpack in the semifinals in what could be described as one of the best games in Mingo County Soccer history. The game ended on a second round of penalty kicks.
In the other semi-final, Burch overcame a first half deficit to defeat the Gilbert Lions to reach the championship game. Burch was able to pull ahead in the 2nd half as the result of a hat trick by Tyler Slone, and a goal each by Ethan Evans and Kaden Collins. Gilbert’s Hunter Abbott scored two goals, while goalkeeper Mallory Roberts recorded multiple digit saves.
This is the third county championship for Burch since Mingo County began soccer play in 2011. Burch is coached by Kristi Hardin and Jeremy Davis, while Lenore is led by Jamie Heflin and Christina Golden.
