CLEAR FORK – Saturday night will kick off the West Virginia High School football season with the annual Simpkins Law East-West All-star Classic game being held at Harless Stadium. The game will be played featuring last year’s graduating seniors and serves as a final chance, for some players, to prove themselves on the football field before they continue on with their lives.

The East All-Stars are bringing a lot of talent to the game. Head Coach Larry Cook said, “We have a great group of kids this year; these kids are very competitive and are ready to give it all one last time, from what I know about the West team I know this will be a great game.”

Practices began for both squads this week, and both coaches say they have had great turn outs. All players will get their opportunity to showcase their talent throughout the game.

“All of these players are great and very athletic, we’ve only had one practice so far and it’s hard to tell who will be the game changers this year, we need to get some plays in and get the kids used to our game plan before we can really see what we have here,” added Cook.

The East squad has players from Beckley Woodrow Wilson, Westside, Wyoming East, Man, Mt. View and River View.

Cook is the former coach at the old Gilbert High School. He was an offensive lineman for West Virginia University back in the later 1980s, after a standout high school career at the old Oceana High School.

Cook is now the head coach at Westside High School in Wyoming County.

The anticipation has been building fast during the last week, football season is almost here. The game is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 1, at Harless Stadium on the campus of Mingo Central High School along the King Coal Highway.

“I hope everyone gets to make it out to see the game, this will be a great night of high school football,” Cook concluded.
