Elmore, Taylor mamed preseason All-Conference

Marshall picked fourth in preseason poll

Staff Report

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall men’s basketball senior forward Ryan Taylor and junior guard Jon Elmore were named to the 2016-17 Preseason All-Conference USA team, the league announced Thursday.

Taylor and Elmore mark the first time two Herd players have been named to the Preseason All-C-USA since DeAndre Kane and Dennis Tinnon did so in 2012.

“I’m happy that our players for getting recognized by the conference,” head coach Dan D’Antoni said. “Ryan Taylor has developed really well since he first arrived on campus. His improvement, how he plays the game and how he fits the game has been dramatic. I think he can be the best player in the league. I think he can certainly compete for Player of the Year.

“Since Jon arrived and took over the point guard position for us, our team has had success and wins. Jon powers that and is certainly one of the top performers in the conference.”

After earning consecutive Preseason All-C-USA team selections (2015-16), Taylor enters his final season at Marshall after becoming the sixth Herd player in program history to record at least 1,300 points and 700 rebounds in his career. The Indianapolis native averaged 14.2 points per game and 6.6 rebounds per game. He currently leads C-USA with 27 career double-doubles, having earned six last season.

Elmore returns as the team’s top scorer and the primary assist man, averaging 15.2 points and 5.8 assists. After sitting out the first eight games due to transfer rules, Marshall finished 15-10 after the Charleston, W.Va., native became eligible. Elmore reached double-figure scoring in 20 of his 25 games in the 2015-16 season. The three-point specialist also landed on the 2015-16 C-USA All-Academic Team for his efforts off of the court.

Marshall was picked fourth in the 14-team preseason poll.

Marshall will open the season with an exhibition game vs. West Virginia State on Nov. 3. The regular season opens with Marshall hosting North Carolina Central on Nov. 12.
