GOODY, Ky – The 58th District Soccer Tournament is set to begin Monday for the girls’ and boys’ teams around the area. The Hometown Pirates are setting good in the brackets.
The Belfry Lady Pirates finished the season with an overall record of 6-10-1 and set nicely in third place with a district record of 4-4. The Lawrence County Lady Bulldogs stole the show with a district record of 7-0 putting them in first place. The seeds are as follows with district records included; Lawrence County (7-0), Pikeville (6-2), Belfry (4-4), Shelby Valley (2-6), and Pike Central (0-7).
With the five team set up that means three teams get a Bye in the opening round so that one team can be eliminated. The opening game will be played between No.4 Shelby Valley and No. 5 Pike County Central. That game will be played on Monday at Pikeville at 7:00 p.m.
The Lady Pirates will face off against Pikeville on October, 12. at Pikeville at 6:00 p.m. The Lady Pirates have faced the Lady Panthers twice during the regular season and barely lost both matches. In the first meeting the Lady Panthers won with a final score of 2-1 and in the second meeting the Lady Pirates lost with a final score of 4-3.
Last season they met the Lady Panthers in the opening round and won the match by a score of 3-2 after winning once and being defeated once in the 2015 season by the Lady Panthers.
In the boys bracket the Pirates sit in the number one spot. Belfry dominated the regular season and with one game remaining against Hazard they have a record of 12-5-1.
There are only four teams competing in the boys’ bracket so the Pirates will square off against No. 4 seeded Shelby Valley on Tuesday October, 11. at Pikeville at 6:00 p.m.
The seeds are as follows along with district records; Belfry (5-1), Pikeville (4-2), Pike Central (3-3), and Shelby Valley (0-6). The No. 2 and No.3 seeds Pikeville and Pike Central will play after the Belfry game at 8:00 p.m.
The Pirates beat Shelby Valley twice during the regular season and shutout the Wildcats in both games. The one district loss for the Pirates came at the hands of the Pike County Central Hawks in a match that was decided by penalty kicks. That was the first meeting between the Pirates and Hawks but in the second meeting the Pirates edged Pike Central by one point.
Regardless, the Hawks will have to get through Pikeville first before they have a chance at meeting the Pirates once again. The Hawks have lost 6-0 to the Panthers in both regular season meetings.
The Girls action will begin on Monday October, 10. and the boys action will begin on Tuesday October, 11. And Pikeville will host the tournament throughout its entirety.
