TVHS travels to Buffalo

Panthers have tough game with Bison

By William Plaster - [email protected]

NAUGATUCK – The Tug Valley Panthers will have their hands full this Friday night as they square off against unbeaten Buffalo (4-0).

The Panthers were cruising smooth with a record of 3-1 until meeting the Tolsia Rebels last Friday night. The Panthers are now setting in a record of 3-2 with Buffalo coming off of a week four (4) BYE. This could be a tricky game for the Panthers who now have a best case scenario of finishing the season with a record of 8-2.

The class-A scene is tight, mid-way through the season, with East Hardy and South Harrison tied for first place. Buffalo is ranked fourth and the Panthers are ranked 17th. There are five unbeaten teams inside the top 10 and if the Panthers have hopes of continuing their two-year play-off run they will not want to fall too far behind.

Tug Valley will be facing a stout running team. The Bison can attribute much of their success to the legs of senior running back Dylan Lucas. Through four games Lucas has earned over 1,000-yards on 57 carries. Lucas has rushed for over 100-yards in all four games and has 17 TD’s so far. With receiving included with special team yards Lucas has 1,473-yards all purpose. He is the main concern for the Panthers defense.

Lucas is a great open-field runner and has the ability to make defenses miss. The Bison use Lucas any way that they can; he can be seen in the passing game, running up the middle, or tosses around the end. They will use him in draw plays and counters.

Quarterback Ethan Burgess is also someone who cannot be overlooked. Burgess has over a fifty percent completion rate through four games with 13 completions of 24 attempts. Burgess has thrown for 358-yards with nine TD’s and one interception. The Panthers will have to work on containment with Burgess who can scramble if needed; his favorite receiving target is tight end Owen Tillis who can be seen lining up tight or wide. Tillis is listed as 6-foot-3, 248 lbs. and also plays defensive end.

If the Panthers manage to contain Lucas they will need to keep Burgess and Tillis in mind also.

The Panthers had a rough time containing Tolsia signal caller Logan Presley last game as Presley rushed to the sideline multiple times gaining three or four yards at a time. The play worked over and over and Tolsia was able to eat up a lot of valuable time during drives of that nature.

Tillis is also a worry for the Panthers on defense. Through four games he has five sacks and 32 tackles. Jacob Hanshaw leads the team in tackles with 45. On the defensive line the Panthers will have to worry about big Hunter Allen who is able to create pressure and pursue the QB well. The Bison’s defensive backs are tough as well with five interceptions this season.

The Panthers rush attack was limited to only 134-yards last Friday and the offense was held to only 189-yards of total offense. The Panthers will need big performances from both the offense and defense in this match against the unbeaten Bison.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Buffalo. Below are the Panthers cumulative stats through five games:
