WILLIAMSON – The 2015 Williamson High School Athletic Hall of Fame committee has announced the newest group of inductees. They are:
Barry E. Baker, Class of 1989 – Basketball 1986-1989; Basketball Back-to-Back 88-89 State Champs; 1st Team All-State Basketball 1988-1989; Runner-Up for Player of the Year in Basketball.
Jerry “Fred” Russell, Class of 2002 – Football All-State 2001-2002; Defensive MVP All-Area Team 2001-2002; North-South Selection 2002 Football; Basketball All-Tournament 2001; All-Area 2000-2002; State Champ 2001.
Thomas “Tom” McQueen, Class of 1965 – 3 year Letterman, Football; 4 year Letterman, Baseball; Honorable Mention All-State AAA Football, Senior Year; All-Area Football, 2 years; All-Area Baseball, 3 years; Member of Band and Stage Band, 4 years; National Honor Society Member; Golden Horseshoe Honor Student Attendee; Attended Boys State – Honor Student; United States Naval Academy 1969 Graduate; MBA, U.S. Navy School; Retired Captain U.S. Navy as Pilot and Supply Officer (27 years).
James E. “Jim” Jones, Class of 1952 – Varsity Basketball 1951-1952; Manager WV All-Stars 1951 Basketball; Member WV All-Stars 1952 Basketball; All-Tournament 1952 Basketball Team; Recipient Bennet Bias Cup 1952; Scored First Field Goal at New Williamson Field House; Played U.S. Air Force Basketball at Travis AFB and Kadena AFB.
Steven Patrick Turner, Class of 2005 – Senior: Basketball 1st Team All-State (Captain); 1st Team All-Area (Captain); All-Area Player of the Year; McDonald’s All-American Nominee; Over 1,000 Career Points Scored; 1st Team All-Area in Football & Baseball; Honorable Mention All-State in Baseball. Junior: Basketball 1st Team All-State & All-Area; WV All-Area Player of the Year; All-Tournament Team; 1st Team All-Area in Football & Baseball. Sophomore: Basketball All-State Honorable Mention; 1st Team All-Area; Honorable Mention All-Area in Football & Baseball. Freshman: Basketball All-State Honorable Mention; 3rd Team All-Area.
John Mark Copley, Class of 1983 – AA State Championship 1983 Basketball Team; 1981 AAA State Runner-Up Basketball Team; Earned 2 Varsity Basketball Letters; Earned 3 Varsity Football Letters; Earned 3 Varsity Baseball Letters; Voted Best All-Around Athlete at WHS in 1983; Marietta College Basketball 1983-86; Earned Varsity Letter playing for the Pioneers in 1986; Graduated from Marietta College in 1987 with a B.A. in Finance and a B.A. in Management; Asst. Football Coach on Wolfpack 1990 State Playoff Team.
John N. Casper David (C.D.) DeWese, Class of 1942 – 1940 & 1941 Letterman in Football; Co-Captain of the 1941 Football Team; Acclaimed by Sports Writers as being among the Best Backfield men in the state in 1941; Halfback on the 1940 Squad; Full Back on the 1941 Team; Played Left Field on Local Red Robin Baseball Team; Possessing a great physique, unusually great speed and a natural ability, his speed and size made him a difficult Full Back to contain.
Erik Rash, Class of 1995 – Football 1992-95; 3 year starter – Running Back/Linebacker/Cornerback; Williamson Daily News All-Area Football 2nd Team 1992-93; WV Special Honorable Mention All-State Team 93-94; WDN All-Area Football 1st Team 93-94; Led team in Tackles & Receptions; 1994-95: WV All-State 2nd Team; Captain of WDN 1st Team All-Area Football; Won 5 WDN Player of the Week Awards; Signed a Full Football Scholarship with Glenville State College; WHS Tony Gentile Award – Best All-Around Athlete; Baseball 1994-95 2 yr. starter Pitcher/Shortstop; WDN All-Area Baseball 1st Team 1994; WV Sectional All-Tournament Team 1994; WV Honorable Mention All-State Team 1995; WDN All-Area Baseball 1st Team 1995; WV Sectional All-Tournament Team 1995.
Tommy Fletcher, Class of 1971 – 1st Team All-Area Baseball 1970-71; Honorable Mention All-State Triple A Baseball 1971; 2nd Team All-Area Basketball 1971; Billy Ray Hager Award 1971; Coach for Little League Baseball.
Christopher Thomas Ooten, Class of 2008 – Football 4 yrs. – Fullback/DE, 3 yrs. starter; Basketball 4 yrs. – Center, 2 yr. starter & Captain; Baseball 4 yrs. – Pitcher/Fielder, 4 yr. starter; Pitched 1 No Hit Game, W/15 K’s; 2 yr. member Weight Room, 600 Club; All-Around Best Athlete Award; WHS Class Valedictorian; National Honor Society; Mr. Williamson High School; WHS Most Likely to Succeed; Governor’s Honors Academy; WSAZ Top of the Class Award; Williamson Kiwanis Club Top of the Class Banquet; Who’s Who Among High School Athletes; Promise Scholarship Recipient to WVU; Inducted into the RHO CHI Society (Academic Honor Society in Pharmacy); Graduated WVU School of Pharmacy with 3.73 GPA; Roger S. Kyle Lovern, Class of 1974 – Lettered in Baseball 1973 & 1974; Williamson Daily News Editor, Sports Editor and Journalist; Former Sports and News Director at WBTH-WXCC Radio; Williamson Little League Baseball Coach 1990-2000; Williamson Little League Baseball Manager, All-Star Area Champs 1996; Williamson Buddy League Basketball Coach 1990-2001; Past Williamson Middle School Asst. Football Coach; Former Williamson Middle School Girls’ Basketball Coach; Williamson Boosters Club President and Vice President 2000-2003; Published Author of four books; Local Independent Basketball All-Star and Most Valuable Player. Has a BA in Communications from Bluefield State College.
The WHS Athletic HOF induction weekend will be Friday and Saturday, September 18th and 19th. On Friday night it will be “Meet the Pack” night, beginning at 6:30p.m. at the new WHS Athletic Hall of Fame Room at the Field House. An alumni basketball game is planned at the historic Williamson Fieldhouse.
The Induction Dinner and Ceremony will be held on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at the WHS Athletic Hall of Fame Room at the Field House. Inductees are encouraged to come early for a “Meet and Greet” starting around 12 noon.
The cost of tickets will be $50.00 per person for Friday and Saturday; $35.00 per person for Saturday only, and $25.00 for student tickets. This year’s inductees will receive one free ticket.
