PRESTONSBURG — If you noticed a change in the 15th Region’s standings this morning you probably noticed a standout among the four team race that has been going on since mid-April. The Prostonsburg Blackcats improved to a record of 19-8 after defeating the Belfry Pirates 7-2 on Monday evening at Prestonsburg.
The Pirates fall to a record 17-10 on the season placing them four wins behind the number one seeded Johnson Central.
Prestonsburg jumped out to a quick lead with two runs scored in the first inning and stayed constant throughout the seven inning contest. The Black Cats added two more runs in the third inning and three runs in the fifth inning. Belfry mustered up two runs in the sixth to save the shutout.
The action began when Grand Martin and Wes Hager both hit RBI singles in the first for the Blackcats to get Ryne Slone and Martin across home plate. Martin and Hager returned in the third inning with sacrifice fly’s that got Slone and Bryce Thacker on the scoreboard.
After the Blackcats scored three runs in the fifth with the help of two more RBI singles the Pirates saved face when Colton Cross cennected in the sixth for a two-run single. Garret Fannin and Devin Varney had the scores for Belfry.
The Pirates have two more road games before they return to Belfry to face Letcher County Central, and then they will travel to Jackson City before they get a two game break from the road with home games.
