GOODY,Ky – The Belfry Lady Pirates played steady against the Pike Central Lady Hawks on Thursday evening and pulled off a win with a final score of 9-4.
The rain held off and the weather made it a beautiful day for a ball game, with the exception of a few wind gusts. The victory was an important one to the Lady Pirates as they moved into a perfect 5-0 district record. The Lady Hawks were the first to bat but Belfry kept them scoreless in the first.
The Lady Pirates got the scoring action rolling when Kendra Gannon hit one deep into center field and made it all the way to third. Savannah Wilson hit a grounder to the pitcher and darted up the baseline, with all the action happening at first base Gannon crossed the plate safely. The Lady pirates jumped ahead 1-0 at the end of one inning.
The Lady Hawks fired back in the second after senior Taylor Sowards was knocked in by Abby Branham on a 2-out RBI to center field. Belfry senior, Kyra Stafford stepped to the plate and knocked one deep into right field. Stafford rounded all the bases and recorded an inside the park home run to keep the Lady Pirates ahead by one score.
In the bottom of the third inning Haley Howell got on base for the Lady Hawks after hitting a shot into left field. Howell then stole second and scored when there was a mix-up on an infield fly to Belfry’s shortstop; Stafford. Stafford made up for the mix-up when she recorded an unassisted double play off of the infield fly.
At the top of the third inning Gannon hit a shot deep into left field and rounded the bases to third. Wilson hit another to left field, knocking in Gannon for another score. The Lady Pirates recorded two runs in the fourth when Kayla Christian was knocked home by Paula Dotson on an RBI double to center field. Dotson then crossed home plate after she was knocked in by teammate Emily Deaton on an RBI single to left field.
During the top of the fifth inning Stafford and Christian landed safe on base after Pike Central errors. Smith, Dotson and Gannon all recorded RBI’s to give the Lady Pirates four runs in the fifth.
The Lady Hawks tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh but the Lady pirates held them to only two runs.
Gannon closed the game from the mound for the Lady pirates and recorded nine strikeouts and six walks. The Lady Pirates recorded 11 hits during the game.
The Lady Pirates improve to a record of 4-6 and proved they are better than their record shows. The Lady Hawks fell to a record of 5-5 on the season.
The Lady Pirates will play again on Tuesday when they host Magoffin County at 6:00 p.m.
