GOODY, Ky. – The Belfry Lady Pirates have earned the title of 60th District Champions after beating the Lawrence County Lady Bulldogs 69-45 on Thursday night at Belfry High School Gymnasium.
The Lady Pirates were completely dominant throughout the entire game; they outscored the Lady Bulldogs in all four quarters of play. The winning effort from the Lady Pirates was largely in part of big performances from Lena Hairston, Kylea Stanley, and Lyndsey Miller. Hairston led the Lady Pirates in scoring with 21 points. Stanley and Miller both had double-doubles. Stanley scored 11 points and pulled in 12 rebounds while Miller scored 11 points and pulled in 11 rebounds.
Hairston was solid from the free throw line during the first half; she went 7 for 9 before halftime. Lawrence County only shot 24 percent from the floor and went 2 for 11 from behind the 3-point line. Belfry shot 41 percent from the floor and went 7 for 27 from behind the 3-point line.
Belfry trotted into halftime with a 17 point lead, the score was 34-17. The third period was when the Lady Bulldogs decided to push back. Belfry outscored Lawrence County by only one point, 17-16, in the third.
The Lady Pirates owned the fourth period also with Miller and Robbie-Ann Brewer hitting big 3-pointers. Taylor Layne joined the scoring action for the Lady Pirates and posted five solid points during the fourth period.
Hairston, Stanley and Kailee Rash all finished the regular season scoring over 200 points. Hairston scored 268, Rash scored 215, and Stanley totaled 203. Miller is close behind with 194 points. Rash and Miller lead the way in 3-pointers through the season. Rash has hit 36 and Miller has made 32. Hairston leads the team in free throws after making 80 through the 2015-2016 season.
Looking forward the Lady Pirates are a very young team and will have everyone eligible to return next season.
Belfry and Lawrence County will advance to the 15th Regional Tournament which will be played at the East Ky. Expo Center in Pikeville. The pairings for the Regional Tournament were announced Saturday. That information will be published when made available.
