GOODY, Ky – The Lawrence County Bulldogs took a bite out of the Belfry Pirates in the District Championship this past Thursday night with a convincing 89-53.
Belfry was pumped up heading into the championship game against the Bulldogs. Belfry stayed close until Lawrence County’s Austin Chaffin hit back-to-back 3-pointers to create some distance. The Pirates finished the fourth period down by six points with a score of 19-13.
Lawrence County took complete control of the game during the second period by outscoring Belfry 24-8. Once again Chaffin hit two 3-pointers in the second, and Timmy Dalton added 8 points to the Bulldogs score. The Pirates were being out-rebounded and outscored through most of the second period.
Belfry went to the foul line three times during the second period and nailed 4 out of 6 shots. The Bulldogs entered halftime with a 21 point lead, the score was 43-21. Belfry tried the whole second half to chip away at the Bulldogs lead but Lawrence County kept hitting 3-pointers. Lawrence County hit five 3-pointers in the second half.
Belfry was outscored 46-32 in the second half by Lawrence County. The Bulldogs kept pulling away as the minutes ticked on. The Pirates watched the 60th District Championship shift over to the other bench. The Pirates played hard but Lawrence County was absolutely on fire shooting 62 percent from the floor making 36 of 58 shots. The Bulldogs hit 12 3-pointers during the contest.
Belfry shot 36 percent from the floor and only hit three 3-pointers during the loss. Chaffin won the Tournament MVP award for going 8 for 13 from the floor and 6 for 10 from behind the 3-point line.
Belfry’s Garrett Fannin ended the game with 1,451 career points, moving him past Gary Smith into third place on the All-time scoring list for Belfry boys’ basketball.
The top two teams from each district move on to the regional tournament. Belfry and Lawrence County are in the 15th Region. The Regional Pairings will be decided Saturday at the Eastern Kentucky Expo Center. That information will be published when it becomes available.
