GOODY,Ky. – A 15th Regional upset happened Friday night at the Belfry High School Gymnasium. The (11-15) Belfry Pirates lost to the (6-21) Prestonsburg Blackcats 64-61, in the last game of the regular basketball season.
The Blackcats scored 26 points in the fourth and final period to overtake the Belfry Pirates. Belfry began the game aggressive, and the Pirates sent Prestonsburg to the foul line 41 times throughout the entire game, the Blackcats shot 63 percent on free throws.
The game was back and forth throughout the first half. Prestonsburg won the first period 18-17 and both teams scored 10 points in the second period. In the third period Belfry owned a six point lead at the end. The game had been tied, or close, through much of the third period until Belfry’s Garret Fannin was fouled on an offensive putback. Fannin was sent to the line and turned a 3-point play into momentum for the Pirates.
Belfry started the fourth period in control and a lead of 45-38. Prestonsburg hit a 3-pointer early, to get within one point, then was fouled on the next offensive drive by Belfry that sent Scott Staplenton to the line for three shots. He made 2 out of 3 but it gave the Blackcats the lead.
Prestonsburg jumped out to a six point lead at the 3:30 mark that Belfry failed to overcome. Belfry got back within three points during the final minute but the Blackcats were solid from the free throw line.
Head coach Mark Thompson said. “ We played uninspired in the first half, They were some fighters and their kids played good. A close game at this point in the year is a good thing, it’s a great way to get your team prepared for the tournaments.”
“It’s a shame we lost the last one on our home floor since our kids have fought and done so great down the stretch, but we have always had great opportunities here on this floor and the tournaments will be another great opportunity for us.
Fannin led the Pirates in scoring with a great showing of 29 points. No other Pirate scored double digit points. Prestonsburg was led by Dalton Frasier who scored 19 points and went 9 for 10 from the free throw line.
The Blackcats are a regional opponent for the Pirates with the tournaments set to begin. Belfry will face Pike County Central on Tuesday during the opening round of the district tournament where the top two teams from each district will advance to the Regional Tournament.
