WILLIAMSON – A champion has been crowned! And the winner of the 2016 Mingo County Middle School girls’ basketball championship game is? It’s none other than; the Williamson Lady Wolfpack.
The Lady Wolfpack defeated the Burch Lady Bulldogs on Tuesday night in the middle school girls’ basketball championship game by a final score of 45-28. The Williamson Fieldhouse was packed and the crowd was filled with anticipation. The opening ceremony set the tone for an exciting match-up and the referee tossed the ball into the air.
The Lady Bulldogs scored the first points of the game on a long inbounds pass that caught the Lady Wolfpack by surprise. Williamson answered quickly and the Lady Bulldogs tried the long pass once again to beat the Williamson’s full-court press. Williamson intercepted the pass and Xziah Rhodes knocked down a 3-pointer to put the Lady Wolfpack up by three.
The Lady Wolfpack increased their lead to eight points with 3:00 remaining in the first period and didn’t stop until they had a 12 point lead over the Lady Bulldogs at the end of the first period. The score stood at 14-2 at the end of the first period with Williamson ahead.
The Lady Bulldogs began to push back and started chipping away at Williamson’s lead. At the 3:20 mark of the second period the score stood at 19-11 with the Lady Wolfpack ahead. Burch was picking up fouls left and right and the Lady Wolfpack was capitalizing. Williamson had increased their lead back to 10 points with 1:45 left to play before halftime, the score stood at 23-10.
Both teams scored one final basket before the time ran out and both teams entered the locker room with the score at 25-15. Williamson scored first to start the second half continued on a 16-1 run throughout the third period. At the end of the third period the score stood at 41-16.
The Lady Bulldogs began to fight back late in the fourth period but the effort was too little too late. Burch’s Chelsea Mollett nailed a foul line jumper with 2:00 left before the end of the game. Both teams played a hard fought final two minutes but the Lady Wolfpack walked away with the win and the championship with a score of 45-28.
Erica Crabtree led the Lady Bulldogs in scoring with 10 points, Rhodes led the Lady Wolfpack with 13 points. Williamson had three players score in double-digit points.
The last time Williamson’s girls won the championship was back in 1992-93.
