WILLIAMSON – New Williamson Park Board Assistant Recreation Director Brandon Ball is planning some fun activities and facility improvements in the coming weeks.

Ball is attempting to start a Co-Ed softball league to be played at the City Softball Park located beside the pool. The cost per team is $300 and that includes team T-shirts and umpire fees.

“We are going to build new dugouts for the softball field,” Ball said. He said the facility was used by Williamson Middle School last spring for its softball team.

Ball hopes to get the league started in July and run it toward the autumn and to find out more information on the new league call Ball at the historic Williamson Fieldhouse at 304-235-3690 or his cell at 606-625-2458.

The Park Board and Ball also plan to resurface the outdoor basketball court at the complex in West End and the front tennis court. A new net will be purchased for the tennis court.

There are tentative plans to resurface the two old back tennis courts and turn that into a skateboard park, according to Ball.

The sand volleyball court behind the swimming pool has been worked on and there have been individuals playing at that facility.

“We are aggressively seeking funds and working on new projects,” said Steve Wilson, an active member of the Park Board. “We want the public to be patient with us.”

“We plan to utilize the money wisely to upgrade our facilities,” Wilson added.

Ball said he welcomes suggestions and input for facilities, fund raising and leagues.

Ball would also like to start a men’s independent basketball league like in past years. Those leagues are possible for the outdoor court and at the Fieldhouse during the winter months.

An AAU youth basketball tournament has already been planned for the weekend of June 27 and 28. Several teams have already signed up. This will be for teams from the 3rd grade to the 10th Grade, according to Ball.

Wilson also stressed that the Community Center located beside the pool is still available for rental for parties, wedding receptions and reunions. The sheltered picnic area may still be used, but the pool area will be blocked off.

The Ambassador Christian School is using the Fieldhouse and the adjacent fields, along with the middle school baseball teams. They are also utilizing Jim Van Zant Baseball Field.

Bids are currently being taken by the Park Board to resurface the roof of the historic Fieldhouse.

Wilson said the public is welcome to attend the Park Board meetings and that they are open. They meet the last Friday of the month at 6 p.m. at the Fieldhouse.
