CLARKSBURG – The Tug Valley Panthers edged out a close win Tuesday night against No.3 Clarksburg (Notre Dame) with a final score of 58-55.
The Panthers controlled the first half of the game against Clarksburg and stayed close enough in the second half that the Fighting Irish could not cut away the Panthers lead. The Panthers outscored the Fighting Irish in the first period 14-10. Tug Valley then outscored Clarksburg again in the second period 10-6.
The score heading into halftime was 24-16 in favor of the Panthers. Clarksburg outscored the Panthers 16-12 in the third period. Clarksburg then outscored the panthers 23-22 in the final period but could not steal the lead away from Tug valley.
With this win, the Panthers move to a perfect 4-0 record to begin the season. With the West Virginia high school prep polls set to resume the first week of January the Panthers are well on their way to climbing high in the Class A rankings.
The Panthers shot 46 percent from inside the 3-point line making 13-28 shots. Tug Valley did shoot below average from behind the arc making only 8-24 3-pointers, but shot 73 percent from the free throw line making 8-11 shots.
Clarksburg shot poorly throughout the game; making only 15-57 shots. Clarksburg shot 62 percent from the free throw line making 18-29 shots.
The Panthers will take a break through the holidays and return to action on Dec 29 to face Belfry in the Mountain Schoolboy Class held at Belfry high school gymnasium. The Schoolboy Classic will be a three day tournament with 10 teams participating and will run from Dec 28. through Dec 30.
Tyler May led the Panthers in scoring with 16 points on the night. May nailed two 3-pointers in the first half and one two-pointer for eight points in the first half. May then scored eight points in the second half; making two shots from inside the arc and 4-5 free throws. Jeremy Dillon finished the night leading the Panthers in rebounds with nine and adding seven points to the total.
Jarred West led Clarksburg in points on the night with 31 points. Todd Griffith led the Fighting Irish in rebounds with six.
