GOODY, Ky. – The Belfry Pirates are set to face Lawrence County in the quarter-finals of the 2015 Class 3A Russell Athletics/KHSAA Commonwealth Gridiron Bowl Friday night at CAM Stadium.
Last week the Pirates defeated Russell by a score of 42-12, while Lawrence County knocked out West Carter by a final score of 45-38.
Belfry beat Lawrence County during the regular season in the closest scoring game they have played in thus far in the 2015 season. The narrow four point victory for the Pirates should give an example of how tough of an opponent Lawrence County could be.
Lawrence County’s offense is led by quarterback Grant Kiser. Kiser can throw and he can run, he has thrown for 2,228-yards and 28 touchdowns so far this season. Kiser’s two favorite receivers are Robert Dalton and Timmy Dalton. These two receivers are as close, statistically, as they can be with only one yard and one touchdown separating them. Cole Mosley does the running for the Bulldogs with 726-yards on the season.
The Lawrence County Bulldogs finished the regular season with a record of 7-3, they beat Fleming County in the first round of the playoffs, before downing West Carter. Belfry has been tearing through opponents all season, the only game the Pirates lost during the regular season was to Cabell Midland. Belfry defeated Bath County and Russell in the first two rounds of the playoffs.
The Pirates have a great rushing attack. Senior Xondre Willis leads the pack with 951 yards rushing and 12 touchdowns. Junior Andrew Fletcher is not far behind with 646 yards rushing and 11 touchdowns. Coach Philip Haywood and his staff also have Derek Wellman and Cameron Catron, who contribute greatly to the patented Pirates rushing attack.
The Pirates offensive line has opened up running lanes for the Pirate backfield and protected quarterback Noah Corbett.
The defense is led by several player including senior linebacker Nate Sanger, and junior defensive linemen Cole Bentley and Ray Horton.
Kickoff time is 7:30 p.m.
The winner of Belfry and Lawrence County game will face the winner of Bell County and Corbin contest.
