POCA – The Mingo Central Miners put a thumping on winless Poca on Friday when the Miners beat the Dots by a score of 71-16.
The scoring started with 8:13 left to play in the first quarter when Mingo Central running back Deonte Joplin ran 62-yards from scrimmage to pay dirt. Steven Hammond connected with Taylor Thornsbury for the two-point conversion to make the opening score 8-0.
Mingo Central scored again with 3:57 left to play in the first quarter when Hammond connected with Tyler Grimmette for a 53-yard passing touchdown. Jeremy Harrison added the extra point kick.
Caleb Lester scored next for the Miners from 5-yards out with 24 seconds left to go in the first quarter. Harrison missed the extra point kick and Miners led by a score of 21-0.
Lester scored again from 5-yards out for Mingo Central with 9:35 left to play in the first half. Harrison missed the extra point kick and the Miners stayed up 27-0. Joplin rushed in from 1-yard out on the next score with 7:30 left to play in the second quarter. Harrison made the extra point kick and the score was 34-0.
The Next score for the Miners came with 6:27 left to play in the second quarter when Hammond connected with Stephen Whitt for a 37-yard touchdown pass. Harrison made the extra-point kick.
The Miners recovered a fumble in the end zone for a safety to make the score 43-0.
Joplin rushed in the next touchdown from 5-yards out with 3:50 left to play in the first half. Harrison completed the two point conversion pass to Joplin to make the score 51-0.
With 46 seconds left to go in the first half Hammond connected with Dalton Sheppard for a 5-yard pass and score. Harrison missed the extra point kick and the Miners entered halftime with a 57 point lead.
Garret Clevenger scored the first points of the second half for the Miners from 4-yards out with 7:23 left to play in the third quarter. Harrison made the extra point kick.
Clevenger scored again for the Miners at the 3:23 mark on a long 92-yard dash to pay dirt. Harrison added the extra point kick and Mingo Central took a commanding 71-0 lead.
Kaden Meeks connected with Mathew Gibson on back to back scoring plays for two scores for the Dots. They converted both two-point conversions and the game ended with a final score of 71-16.
Mingo Central gained 582-yards of total offense on 42 offensive plays. The Miners had 181-yards passing on nine completions and gained 401-yards on the ground on 24 rushing attempts.
The Miners defense held the Dots to 228-yards of total offense, 201-yards passing and 27-yards rushing.
Hammond finished the game with nine completions and 181-yards passing and three passing touchdowns. Joplin rushed seven times for 142-yards and three rushing touchdowns. Trey Lester rumbled for 105-yards on five carries. Clevenger and Lester had two rushing touchdowns each. Grimmette, Sheppard and Whitt all caught one touchdown pass each.
Lester led the Miners in tackles with five. Ethan Collins, Daniel Buchanan and Luke Heft all had one sack. Heft and Thomas Harmon each had one interception.
Mingo Central improves to a record of 5-1 on the season.
