ONA, W.Va.- The Belfry Pirates were handed their first loss of the season by Cabell Midland, Friday night by a score of 49-7.
Both teams entered the game undefeated and both ranked number one in the state in the Class 3A category. It was a battle between the states and West Virginia won.
Cabell Midland scored first with 8:57 left to go in the first quarter on a 63-yard run. They added the extra point kick and jumped out to 7-0 lead over the Pirates.
The Knights scored again on 28-yard run with 1:05 left to play in the first quarter. They added the extra point and led the pirates 14-0.
In the second quarter the Knights scored on 25-yard dash to pay dirt with 6:30 left to play in the first half. They added the extra point and jumped up by three scores.
The only points scored by the pirates came from a 77-yard pass from Noah Corbett to Austin Woolum with 6:16 left to play in the first half. Woolum added the extra- point kick and put seven points of the board for the Pirates.
Cabell Midland scored twice before half time to make the score at the half 35-7 in favor of the Knights.
The Knights scored twice more in the second half, once from a 66-yard run and then from a six yard run to make the final score of the ball game 49-7.
The Pirates only accumulated 136-yards rushing on 42 carries. Corbett completed one of his five passes and that one was the only score for Belfry.
Cabell Midland rushed for 392-yards and passed for one touchdown. The Knights now advance to 6-0 on the season and the Pirates fall to 5-1.
Players of the game for Cabell-Midland were Devin Stapleton with 216 yards and five TDs and Chris Camp with 16 tackles.
Next week the Pirates will try to bounce back against Lawrence County.
