GOODY, K.y. – The Belfry boys’ soccer team defeated the Mingo Central Miners soccer team during the last match held at Belfry High School soccer field. The Pirates won the match by a score of 9-0.
Blake Mendoza started off the avalanche of goals scored by the Pirates during the 26th minute with an unassisted goal. Matt Lambert followed quickly after with an unassisted goal during the 31st minute.
During the 34th minute there was some confusion within the Mingo Central squad when they inadvertently scored a goal for the Pirates making the score at halftime 3-0.
Mendoza scored again after the half with another unassisted goal during the 44th minute. Trevor Kohari scored next for the Pirates from a Lambert assist to make the score 5-0.
Mendoza and Lambert continued the assault by scoring the next two goals, unassisted, for the Pirates. During the 64th minute the Pirates scored again after the ball bounced off of a Mingo Central player and into the goal. Nick McNamee scored the last goal for the Pirates during the 69th minute to seal the win for Belfry and make the final score 9-0.
The Pirates attempted 43 shots on the goal, Mingo Central goalie, Josh Murphy had 14 saves. James Blevins finished the final 12 minutes as goalie for the Miners and had 4 saves.
The Miners attempted two shots on the goal and Belfry goalie Dominic Gentile had one save.
This win puts the Pirates at 7-2 on the season, the Miners fall to 1-4.
Belfry will travel to Paintsville on Sept. 17. to face the Tigers at 6:00 p.m., The Miners will travel to Poca to take on the Dots on Sept. 15. At 7:00 p.m.
