At the Beach

We went to the beach last week and it was glorious.

Going to the beach is a spiritual retreat for me. My beloved feels the same way. It’s the Trinity displayed all at once.

The breeze represents the Holy Spirit. I close my eyes and think of the words to an old hymn. Years ago, when my grandparents were in the church choir, I remember them singing “Breathe on me, breathe on me, Holy Spirit, breathe on me. Take thou my heart, cleanse every part. Holy Spirit, breathe on me.” That’s my prayer, too.

The sun makes me think of the Son, Jesus. It warms me AND my heart like a hug. I close my eyes and bask in the warmth of His embrace.

The sound of the waves reminds me of God Almighty. When we are at the beach I look up as many Bible verses about the ocean I can find. They are marked “At the beach with TR” and go back years and years. (“TR” is my beloved.)

Genesis 1:9-10 tell about when God made the seas. It was on the third day. He said it was good and I agree! On the fifth day, He said, “Let the waters teem with living creatures…So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living and moving thing with which the water teems…” I bet He had fun THAT day!

Here are some of my favorites…Psalm 29:3-4: The voice of the LORD is over the waters, the God of glory thunders, the LORD thunders over the mighty waters.

Psalm 148:7: Praise the LORD you great sea creatures and all ocean depths. (I picture an octopus clapping all of its hands! And seals, too!)

The passage I love most is Psalm 139:7-10: “Where can I go from Your Spirit? Where can I flee from Your presence? If I go up to the heavens, You are there; if I make my bed in the depths, You are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there Your hand will guide me, Your right hand will hold me fast.”

The ocean takes my breath. Its magnificence is beyond words. I always wonder, “How can people believe there’s no God?!” His handiwork is EVERYWHERE!

When I close my eyes, feel the breeze, feel the warmth of the sun and hear the waves crashing and roaring, I feel close to heaven and refreshed.

Some people don’t like the beach at all, to be honest. They love camping, hiking, amusement parks, taking cruises, aquariums, zoos, or train rides to DC. Whatever your favorite is, I hope you can get out of town this summer, too, even for a weekend!

For years, we didn’t get to go on vacation. We waved as everybody else packed up and pulled out leaving us behind. Now, we do our best to get to the beach every year. We start counting down the days in January!

Whether you drive or fly it seems like it takes forever to get there! This year we arrived at our destination an hour and a half before time to eat supper. We put on our swimsuits and rushed to see the ocean-even for a short time.

My beloved went for a walk and I sat down to take it all in. “Thank You, Lord, for your marvelous creation…” I started. The next thing I knew, I woke myself up snoring! I was horrified! I knew it was loud because it woke ME up! I peeked around to see if any of my sunbathing neighbors had heard. No worries. They were asleep, too!
