Mistletoe Market planned

Staff Report

WILLIAMSON – The town of Williamson is thinking big about shopping small! Saturday, November 26th is a designated Shop Small Saturday through the American Express program designed to promote local community businesses. The Tug Valley Chamber of Commerce, the Williamson CVB, community volunteers and local businesses, artisans, and vendors are coming together to offer the Small Business Saturday – Mistletoe Market Festival. The activities will kick off at 2:00 p.m. Downtown businesses will be open and offering special promotions and gift ideas for everyone on your Christmas list. Second Avenue will be the main area for vendors with activities happening in adjoining streets.

The list of vendors is still growing but more are wanted! Vendors are encouraged to register by Friday, November 19th . Registration is $15 per reserve space and can be paid by visiting the Williamson City Hall or pay by phone 304-235-1510. Once registered vendors are asked to post pictures or descriptions of what items they are bringing to the event Facebook page. If your business isn’t the typical retail business but you’d like to come to the festival to promote what you offer, you are encouraged to register, set up a booth and give out information as a way to advertise your services. Maybe your business can offer gift certificates. Those would be great Christmas gifts .

Our goal is to keep money inside of our local communities and invest back into our towns. When you shop local you are helping our towns grow. Why spend all of your money with strangers when we will have unique gift items available to give to friends and family this year? The day isn’t just about shopping though.

During the festival we will have two scavenger hunts with prizes to be given. The Candy Cane scavenger hunt map for kids will be available at the Hatfield & McCoy Inn booth. If you find the special candy canes you win a prize! The adults can register for their own scavenger hunt at Mrs. Claus’s gingerbread house by 3pm. All scavenger hunt maps must be turned back in by 6pm and prizes will be awarded based on points you earned.

At 4:00 p.m. Candy Cane Lane (Court Street)will be set up for children to come write a letter to Santa and do a craft. They will also be able to meet the the snow Queen Else, Anna, and Olaf. Of course, what’s a festival without Santa. Santa will be greeting the children from 4:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. in front of Mrs. Claus’s gingerbread house (The Coal House). Free hot cocoa and cookies will be provided on Candy Cane Lane too. As always we will have festive music to be enjoyed from local DJ Homer Mullins from 4:00 – 6:30. At 4:30 p.m. the DJ will be playing “Jingle Bell Rock” and if you’ve watched the popular movie “Mean Girls” you may want to gather some friends and do the dance routine.

At 5 pm it’s time for a Look Alike contest with trophies to be awarded! Dress as one of these Christmas movie characters : Clark Griswold & Cousin Eddie “ National Lampoons Christmas Vacation” , Elf “Elf”, Ralphie as the Pink Nightmare “A Christmas Story”, Kevin, Harry, and Marv “Home Alone”, Grinch and Cindy Lou Who “Grinch”, Charlie Brown “ A Charlie Brown Christmas.”

At 6:30 p.m. the festival will conclude with Santa lighting the community Christmas tree and that will begin the fireworks display! The Christmas fireworks display will be shot from 1st avenue and visible to festival attendees in town. This will be a smaller scale fireworks display to ensure the safety of the public but it will be beautiful! We will have an information booth during the festival to handle questions & provide details for the day. Details are still in process for the event. We are working right up to the last minute to ensure a fun time is had by all! We are ready to kick off Christmas in the Tug Valley!

Along with the festival our goal is to decorate Williamson for our Christmas season. The Snowman Slide contest is happening now. Businesses may participate by coming up with a unique Snowman to display in front of their shops. Also, a window decorating contest is ongoing. Any business, church, group or family is welcome to create a large, wooden Christmas cards to display along 1st avenue. If you decide to do this please ensure you display it safely and secure so it doesn’t tip over. These are some of the ways we hope to make for a festive look in Williamson.

As always, our efforts are volunteer and donation based which makes Christmas decorations tricky to obtain. Christmas light donations are appreciated! We are looking for multi colored lights that we can use to make our town merry and bright! We are especially interested in solar lights. Solar lights are available for purchase on line and in many stores around the $20.00 price point. The solar lights would be perfect for Williamson because of the limited electrical outlets and no additional electric cost. If you would like to donate lights these can be dropped off at the Coal House or Daddy’s Girls 2 Bakery on Second avenue.

Most information for these events can be found on FB under the Williamson CVB page and under the separate event pages. You may also contact Tonya Webb at 606-625-1628, Chris Dotson 304-785-6773 or Natalie Taylor 304-235-5240.
