Bible Devotions

Leadership Matters

By Ralph and Elizabeth Pyszkowski

Many in America are asking one question: When will this political contest ever end? Finally, millions will vote and elect a new leader this Tuesday. History is about to be made in one of the most unusual election cycles ever. In spite of the enormous impact to our nation, many will not participate and just stay home. They may doubt the significance of their vote. It could be that they are unenthusiastic about the choices. Some even think that all political leaders are so corrupt it doesn’t matter. With all of the negativity that we have seen, why vote at all? The Bible gives us insight as to why we should engage in the political process.

A relevant example can be read in 1 Samuel 16:1-13: “Now the LORD said to Samuel, “How long will you grieve over Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and go; I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have selected a king for Myself among his sons.” An entire nation was in mourning over a grave mistake. They desired a King that was against the will of the Lord. God gave them this wish since they refused to listen to his voice. King Saul became a ruler that compromised with sin. He disobeyed God and led the nation to public shame. Israel suffered defeat on the battlefield with her enemies and lost many lives as a result of Saul’s failures. This kingdom became the dark years of Israeli history and they learned that obedience and leadership matters.

Franklin Graham has led a prayer movement in all 50 States this year to encourage Christians to engage in politics. Not only should we pray, but also vote the Bible and participate where we can. From the mayor to the White House, we should elect leaders who will reflect Christian values and listen to God. In some situations, we should “hold our nose” and vote for the lesser of two evils. Even in these cases, religious freedom, the 2nd amendment, the Supreme Court, moral issues and the economy could be greatly impacted. A pivotal moment has come and America is at the crossroads. If there was ever a time for God’s people to pray and shine their lights, the time is now. Let us seek the face of God to reject the “Saul” candidates of every race. May he rise up a David again to bring America’s best days for the next 4 years.
