Halloween costumes come in all shapes and sizes and can be very creative. Super heroes, movie stars, and monster outfits can completely transform a person’s appearance. They can be mysterious and hide things that are usually obvious. In some cases, they can even be quite scary. However, it is not the creepy attire that people should worry about, but rather the deception that is prevalent into today’s society. This has certainly been uncovered politically in the current election season. It is even more dangerous to see Americans mislead about current moral issues. In many cases, folks will mask sin and spin it into something positive. For some, finding the facts may be more difficult than identifying a friend at a costume party. The word of God can expose evil in all forms and give us the truth that leads to life.
Our arch enemy is revealed in 2 Corinthians 11:3: “But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.” At first, the temptation of the forbidden fruit didn’t overpower Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. The abundance of beauty and the pleasures of paradise is what captured their attention. It wasn’t until Satan deceived them that it took center stage in their minds and hearts. His well-crafted plan included half-truths, eloquent words, positive emotions, and curious imaginations. He was able to paint an irresistible picture and make rebellion towards God exciting. Even today, he attracts many to the appealing “fruits” of sexual immorality, substance abuse, greed, hatred and many other sins forbidden by God. Just like his involvement with man’s fall in the garden, Satan’s mission today is to kill, steal, and destroy.
It is for this reason that we should be vigilant and not gullible to the trickery in the world. Do not fall for false assumptions that sin is ok with God and will be unconditionally pardoned. Sin may wear many different disguises, but it still leads to destruction. The abomination of abortion and homosexual marriage takes on the costumes of “pro-choice” and “pro-equality.” Philosophy that states there are many ways that lead to heaven has the appearance of “tolerance and acceptance”, while God calls it idolatry. The devil also wants to dress up folks as “good” moral people who don’t need Christ to go to Heaven. Many may wear the costume of morality; however, we have all sinned and are in need of a savior. Our righteousness alone is like filthy rags and God wants to give us his righteousness. He promises to clothe us in robes of white by faith in Christ. Armor yourself with the word today so that you will not fall prey to deception.
