CHATTAROY, W.Va. – A Mingo County man was charged with first degree sexual abuse and contributing to the delinquency of a minor after his arrest by West Virginia State Police (WVSP) Trooper H.A. Rose.
According to Sgt. M.S. Lively with the Williamson detachment of the WVSP Jerry Bruce Swafford, 61 of Chattaroy, W.Va. was taken into custody at his residence Wednesday night.
Troopers say Swafford had a party at his residence on Saturday night; the teenager was inappropriately touched by Swafford after she passed out on his bed, according to the police report. Another student walked in on the abuse and notified authorities.
WVSP also said Swafford supplied the alcohol for the party.
Swafford who is a janitor at Belfry High School at Belfry, Kentucky confessed to touching the student, according to state police.
Sgt. Lively said although his department feels this is an isolated incident the investigation is ongoing.
According to Neal Smith, Attorney for the Pike County Board of Education, Swafford has been suspended without pay and is expected to be terminated from his position.
Swafford was taken and lodged in the Southwestern Regional Jail in Holden, W.Va. His bond was set at $101,000 full cash bond by the Mingo County Magistrate Court.
