WILLIAMSON – The Williamson Park Board is moving forward with several projects that are currently underway that will make improvements to the facilities.
The front tennis court has been resurfaced with a special green paint and new poles and a new net will be installed, according to Park Board Director Brandon Ball.
Work was being done on resurfacing the outdoor basketball court on Thursday. Once the cracks are filled the court will be painted maroon and the goals will be fixed and new nets will be installed. The work is being done by Streamline Enterprises of Ragland, W.Va.
A cinderblock concession stand is also being erected on one of the old back tennis courts. Ball hopes that will be finished in the near future. The area beside that, which was another tennis court, will be used for corn-hole tournaments, badminton and 4-squares.
Ball said a canopy will also be built near the concession area and picnic tables will be placed under that cover.
New dugouts were already constructed at the City Softball Park and new lights were installed. A Co-Ed softball league has begun with six teams and that is going very well, according to Ball.
A big free 4th of July weekend bash will be held on Saturday, July 2 at the new renovated facilities. There will be free hot dogs, chips, soft drinks and watermelon. Ball said there will also be a corn-hole tournament, beach volleyball and basketball games going on during that daytime event. More information will be released on this event at a later date. Ball said the Park Board is hoping to get more contributions to help offset the cost of this celebration.
At the Williamson Fieldhouse there are a couple of basketball camps and an AAU tournament scheduled.
The 22nd Annual First Baptist Bible Basketball Camp will be held July 18 – July 22. Friday July 22, 2016 at 6:00 pm there will be a pizza party and children will be able to showcase what they have learned during the week. Cost of Camp is $5 to help cover the cost of the T-shirts. Participants will receive a T-shirt, Bible, and a special surprise.
The Park Board will be hosting the Hooping at the Historic Williamson Fieldhouse basketball tournament on June 25 and June 26. A $150 dollar fee will get you three games in this round-robin tournament available to ages six years old to 18 years old.
