Former Delbarton Cop arrested for sexual assault

DELBARTON – A former Delbarton Police Officer plead guilty Tuesday to the sexual assault of a 15 -year-old girl.

Jonathan New, 27 from Delbarton, was employed as an officer by the Town of Delbarton when the sexual assault allegedly occurred.

According to Police Chief Earl Spence, New was suspended, and then subsequently fired from his job as patrolman on February 23, 2016.

During the course of the investigation officials were able to determine the sexual assault took place in November 2015 and December 2015.

After the investigation began, two other victims came forth and stated they had also been assaulted by New.

Due to the ongoing investigation officials were unable to reveal details surrounding the case. New turned his self into authorities and was charged formally with the crime.

New entered a guilty plea and has been registered as a sex offender.

Chief Spence stated “Most police officers do not condone this type of behavior, especially me.” Chief Spence also stated “He took appropriate action in the matter and he would do so again, if necessary.”

The West Virginia State Police investigated the allegations and filed charges against New. In a plea agreement New was only charged with sexual assault of one of the victims. No sentencing date has been set for New. The charges carry a one-to-five year sentence.
