WILLIAMSON – The Mingo County Commission approved three agenda items at Wednesday’s Oct. 7 regular meeting.
The commission approved a $2,000 financial contribution to Christian Help.
Commissioner Greg “Hootie” Smith said, “We cannot give the same financial contribution that we have given in the past based upon our current financial situation but we feel that it is necessary to allocate some money and with that I make a motion that we give a financial contribution of $2,000.”
Commissioner Diann Hannah seconded the motion.
The Baisden Fire Department also approached the commission requesting financial assistance. The Baisden Fire Department was approved $1,000. Smith made the motion to approve and it was seconded by Hannah.
Smith said, “We appreciate you all and we know that you are in a rural area. You work very hard and have a great fire department.”
Smith discussed the importance of being fair in regard to each fire department that may approach the commission saying, “We want to be fair to each fire department. We recognize the importance of our fire departments. What we give to Baisden today is something that we have to be prepared for and have the finances to give to each of the other fire departments. I move that we give a financial contribution to the Baisden Fire Department of one thousand dollars.”
The commission also discussed being prepared to offer further assistance with funding on an “as needed” basis.
“If there is an additional need for equipment or something that is a top priority the fire department can always come back but if there is an additional request we would like to have a copy of the financial statement of that department,” Smith said.
A Worksite Provider Agreement for Dislocated Workers Grant from the Human Resource Development Foundation, Inc. was approved by the commission.
“This is a program that the state is utilizing to put out of work people back to work,” Smith said.
The next Mingo County Commission meeting will be held on Tuesday Oct. 20 at 4:30 p.m.
