W.C. “Jolly” Smith, 87, of Williamson, died Wednesday, October 24, 2012, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Huntington.

He was the widower of Julia Smith.

Smith was born in Williamson on February 2, 1925, a son of the late Henry J. and Briza E. Smith.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II on the USS Chief, a minesweeper, in the South Pacific. He owned various businesses in the Williamson area but spent most of his career serving on the Williamson Police Department and was chief of police when he retired. He also was a member of the First Baptist Church.

He also was preceded in death by four brothers, Henry J. Smith, Jr., Joshua D. Smith, Jack Smith and Franklin D. Smith; a sister, Sherwood S. Burke.

He is survived by a daughter, Lee Ann Smith Ward of Huntington; a special nephew, Wally Floyd and his wife, Donna, of Williamson, and their son, Joseph; a sister-in-law, Mary Sayers of Williamson; a cousin, Jack Lewis of Sylvatus, Va.; three nieces, Elaine Gorrence, of Cumberland Wisc., Cookie Carpenter, of Pulaski, Va., and Debbie Burke, of Roanoake, Va.; a beloved Boston Terrier dog, Dottie; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday, October 27, at Weaver Mortuary in West Williamson. A committal service will follow at 12:30 p.m., at the mausoleum at Mountain View Memory Gardens in Huddy, Ky. The Rev. Jarrod Belcher will officiate.
