META, Ky. — As the nation begins the observance of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a small community in north central Pike County is still reeling from a murder-suicide early yesterday morning.

According to a press release from the Kentucky State Police, the agency was dispatched to Johns Creek Grocery (formerly Johns Creek IGA) for a possible armed robbery at approximately 6:30 a.m.

However, once officers arrived on the scene found the dead bodies of Jeanetta Leedy 38, and her husband, Jimmy Leedy, 44, inside the store.

The police statement said that evidence inside the grocery indicted Mr. Leedy came inside the business where his wife was employed and began brandishing a pistol. It is further alleged Mr. Leedy then shot is wife and then took his own life.

According to Pike County Coroner Russell Roberts, the couple were going through a divorce and the events of that fatal morning were the results of domestic violence.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Leedy were pronounced dead at the scene by Roberts, who said Mrs. Robert's body has been sent for autopsy. He said the examination should be completed sometime today with a final cause of death being by a gunshot wound.

The shooting still remains under investigation by the Kentucky State Police.

October was declared National Domestic Violence Awareness Month by President Barack Obama.
