Gloria A. Jude, 71, of Matewan, died Sunday, July 11, 2010, at her home in the loving care of her family. She was born in Martin County, Ky., Jan. 8 1939, to the late Wheeler and Viola Evans Carey. Mrs. Jude was a retired educator who worked for Mingo County Schools. She excelled in school, graduating at the young age of 16 from Burch High School in 1955. Upon completion of her excelled high school career, she continued her passion for education at Concord College graduating with a BS in mathematics and obtained her Master's degree from Marshall University. She began her career at Chattaroy high school, where she taught for two years. She transferred to Matewan High School where she taught for 30 years, and concluded her love for education as assistant principle of Matewan Junior High School. Mrs. Jude devoted much of her time to her students and the community. She enjoyed working as a cheerleading coach and majorette sponsor at MHS, was actively involved with scouts and was instrumental in organizing the Matewan Midget League program. She was a proud supporter of the Matewan Jr. High basketball team. Upon retirement, her focus turned to the hobbies that she loved: painting, reading, gardening and pampering her grandchildren. She is survived by her husband of 50 years Harold "Deanie" Jude; daughters, Linda (Brian) Farley of McCarr, Ky., and Rebecca (Dr. Sree Karranam) Jude of Indianapolis, Ind.; five grandchildren who were her pride and joy, Brianna Farley, B.K. Farley, Alie Farley, Maya Jude-Karanam, and Nisha Jude-Karanam; and a host of family and friends. The family will receive friends on Thursday July 15, 2010, from 6 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., at the Chambers Funeral Services chapel. At 7:30 p.m. a brief service of remembrance will be led by the Rev. Carl Butler.
