The Pirates were able to hold their own with Shelby Valley for the better part of the first quarter, but Shelby Valley turned up the pressure.
After the second dunk by Ashley Hatfield in 1st quarter, the Pirates appeared rattled and things just went downhill from there.
During the 2nd quarter, Shelby Valley had a run of 25 points while only allowing Belfry 2 points in the process.
The Wildcats maintained a consistent lead of at least 29 points for the remainder of the game.
Joey Pinson led the Pirates in scoring with 21 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. Morgan Bentley scored 19 points for Belfry, sank 5 for 6 from the free throw line, and grabbed 9 rebounds. Jordan Varney and Jordan Hairston scored 10 points each and Thomas Varney scored 5.
Belfry shot 23-of-48 in overall field goals, had 22 rebounds, 8 assists, 5 steals, and 29 turnovers, almost double the amount Shelby Valley had with 15.
Shelby Valley’s Ashley Hatfield scored the game high of 24 points for the Wildcats, sinking 8-of-12 from the floor, 5-of-7 from the free throw line, and 3-of-5 from three point range. Other scorers for Shelby Valley include: Elisha Justice and Tyler Newsome with 14 points each; Cody Varney and Zach Ramey each scored 12 points; Taylor Newsome scored 8 points; Jacob Robinson and Dylan Tackett scored 4 points apiece; and Colton Damron, Logan Lucas, Rusty Roberts, and Tanner Tackett each got on the board with 2 points each.
Shelby Valley sank 39 of 67 field goals, 8-of-16 threes, 14-of-22 free throws, 14 assists, and grabbed 30 rebounds. Shelby Valley had over three times the amount of steals as Belfry with 16.
Belfry ends the 2009-10 season with a record of 16-9.
Shelby Valley (27-4) will play Betsy Lane (20-6) in the 15th Region Championship game at the Pikeville Expo Center Tuesday at 7 p.m.
