Tough Man provides fun, exciting evening

LOGAN – It was a night of surprises last Saturday night at the 22nd-annual Coal Area Toughman Contest at Logan High School’s Willie Akers Arena.

The biggest surprise of all was in Saturday’s opening bout as Verdunville’s Jordan Moore, a two-time Toughman champion in 2006 and 2007 in the men’s light heavyweight division, was beaten by Charleston’s Matt Garrettson in a split decision by the judges.

Moore, who did not box last year and was fighting in the heavyweight class, beat Everet Dempsey on Friday night in a first-round bout. Moore has a 8-1 record in three years at the Toughman.

Garrettson went on to claim the heavyweight championship with a third-round TKO over Whitman’s John “The Monster” Morrison.

In a controversial decision by the judges Sabrina Lambert of Madison was a surprise winner over Kaitlyn Moore of Lake in the women’s heavyweight title bout. Lambert won via split decision.

In the men’s light heavyweight championship fight, Christopher Waters of South Charleston upset Logan’s “Flawless” Matt Baccus in a decision by the judges.

B.J. Robinson of Huntington beat Jason Gaulter of Beckley in the men’s middle weight championship bout via third-round TKO.

Nitro’s Christy Martin, nicknamed “The Fightin’ Italian Princess,” won the women’s light heavyweight title with a decision over Mallory’s Beth Earnest.

In Saturday night’s semifinals, Baccus won a close decision over Steve “The Blitz” Bailey, a former Chapmanville Regional High School football player. Gaultner won a split decision over Danville’s Evan Adkins. Waters also won a split decision over Whitman’s Joe Garrett. Robinson eliminated fan favorite and 2007 champion “Laughin’” Larry Whitt of Man in a decision.

In Saturday’s opening round fights, Earnest advanced to the women’s light heavyweight finals with a decision over Chapmanville’s Joyce Cook.

Baccus had a first-round knock out over Matt Workman of Dingess.

Adkins, known as the “Boone County Brawler,” moved on with a split decision over Mike “The Real Deal” Beale.

Workman, nicknamed “The Crawley Creek Freak,” advanced with a decision over Justin Hamilton of Phelps, Ky.

Waters had a second-round knock out over Kermit’s Chad Damron.

Whitt had a third-round TKO over Jason Blankenship of Inez, Ky.

Morrison advanced with a decision over Larry Ross of Delbarton.

Garrett moved on with a victory over Kermit’s Kyler Messer.

Robinson scored a decision over Brent Jones of Winfield.

There were 24 bouts in first-round action on Friday night at the Toughman.

Adkins beat Ryan Querry in the first fight, while Waters won the second fight and Morrison won fight No. 3. Gaulter, Ross, Martin, Jones, Messer, George Ball, Blankenship, Damron, Garretson, Katlien Moore, Whitt, Bailey, Workman, Earnest, Mike Beale, Jordan Moore, Lambert, Robinson and Baccus all won fights as well.
