GILBERT — The Gilbert High School Lady Lions volleyball team emerged unscathed from the first night of the Class A Region 4 Section 2 tournament Monday night, while the Man Lady Billies, Matewan Lady Tigers and Williamson Lady Wolves stayed alive and the Burch Lady Bulldogs saw their season come to an abrupt end.

The No. 1-seeded Lady Lions beat Man, 25-16, 25-21 and 25-15. Man had beaten Williamson earlier in the evening, 25-12, 25-15 and 25-17.

“I thought we played really well,” GHS Coach Don Taylor said. “We had a lapse or two and in the second game Man brought it to us, but we played with emotion and that really helped us.”

Gilbert improves to 25-6 with the win. The Lady Lions have not lost a match to any team in their section this year.

Matewan defeated Burch, 3-2. the Lady Dogs won the first set, 25-20, the Lady Tigers won the second, 8-25, Burch won the third, 25-23, and Matewan took the last two sets, 16-25 and 14-16.

Williamson then finished off the Lady Bulldogs, 3-2.

“We played awful and then we played well,” Williamson Coach Tondra Elkins said of her loss to Man and her win over Burch. “We’re just not a consistent team. But, I’m proud of the way my girls fought back. I think, after all this time, they finally realized they can win.”

Burch beat the Lady Wolves 19-25 in the first set of the loser’s bracket match, then topped Williamson 23-25 in the second game. Williamson then won the next three, 25-15, 25-18 and 15-6.

“We played pitiful,” Burch Coach Jan Cisco said of his team’s dismal performance. Burch had beaten both Matewan and Williamson earlier in the season.

“We played like a roller-coaster — up and down. We were up two on Williamson and we let them come back and beat us.”

Tonight, Gilbert takes on Matewan at 6 p.m. and Williamson plays Man.

The winner of the Williamson-Man game will then take on the loser of the Gilbert-Matewan game at 7:30 p.m. All the games are being played at Gilbert High School.
