The No. 1-seeded Lady Lions beat Man, 25-16, 25-21 and 25-15. Man had beaten Williamson earlier in the evening, 25-12, 25-15 and 25-17.
“I thought we played really well,” GHS Coach Don Taylor said. “We had a lapse or two and in the second game Man brought it to us, but we played with emotion and that really helped us.”
Gilbert improves to 25-6 with the win. The Lady Lions have not lost a match to any team in their section this year.
Matewan defeated Burch, 3-2. the Lady Dogs won the first set, 25-20, the Lady Tigers won the second, 8-25, Burch won the third, 25-23, and Matewan took the last two sets, 16-25 and 14-16.
Williamson then finished off the Lady Bulldogs, 3-2.
“We played awful and then we played well,” Williamson Coach Tondra Elkins said of her loss to Man and her win over Burch. “We’re just not a consistent team. But, I’m proud of the way my girls fought back. I think, after all this time, they finally realized they can win.”
Burch beat the Lady Wolves 19-25 in the first set of the loser’s bracket match, then topped Williamson 23-25 in the second game. Williamson then won the next three, 25-15, 25-18 and 15-6.
“We played pitiful,” Burch Coach Jan Cisco said of his team’s dismal performance. Burch had beaten both Matewan and Williamson earlier in the season.
“We played like a roller-coaster — up and down. We were up two on Williamson and we let them come back and beat us.”
Tonight, Gilbert takes on Matewan at 6 p.m. and Williamson plays Man.
The winner of the Williamson-Man game will then take on the loser of the Gilbert-Matewan game at 7:30 p.m. All the games are being played at Gilbert High School.
