WAYNE (AP) — An Army deserter from Virginia is set to stand trial on charges of robbing and killing a West Virginia minister.

Jury selection for the trial of 23-year-old Daniel of Smith of Newport News, Va., was scheduled to begin Monday in Wayne County Circuit Court.

Smith is charged with murder and first-degree robbery in connection with the fatal shooting of the Rev. Mark McCalla. McCalla was killed on June 19, 2008, at a gun range in the Beech Fork Wildlife Management Area.

Co-defendant Stephen Wilson of Cincinnati is scheduled to stand trial in December.

The Army has said Wilson and Smith went absent without leave from Fort Drum in New York in May 2008.

McCalla was the pastor at Highlawn Presbyterian Church in Huntington.
