An early morning fire on Saturday claimed the lives of a 26 year old McCarr resident and her infant son.

Heather Nicole Smith and her six week old son Ethan Smith were said to have been sleeping in the living room of her Farley Bottom mobile home when the fire started.

“You could feel the heat all the way to my front porch. I just prayed Heather and Ethan were sleeping in the back bedroom,” Thomas Francis, step-father of the deceased said. “I tried to make it around to the front of the trailer, but I could barely get by. The fire was coming out from the sides.”

Smith’s daughter Makaylee Smith, was staying with relatives the night of the fire.

Max Smith, Blackberry Volunteer Fire Department chief, said the emergency call was received at 4:42 a.m. to respond to the Smith residence, but was unable to comment further pending investigation by the Kentucky State Police and the state fire marshal.

Family members think fire may have been caused by electrical issues within the mobile home, but as of presstime, the cause of the fire has not been determined.
