WILLIAMSON - Three athletic trainer position vacancies are the glaring highlights on this week’s Mingo County Board of Education Extra-Curricular Program jobs posting.

Athletic trainer positions remain posted at Gilbert, Matewan and Tug Valley High Schools. These positions are posted for work primarily with the high school football teams.

WVSSAC rules stipulate that high schools must have either certified athletic trainers or “limited athletic trainers” hired by their local county board of educations. These positions must be filled and the trainer must be at all football practices and games of their team.

If no trainer is in place for a school by the first day of fall practice in August, a football team cannot practice. Thus there is an urgency to have these positions filled as quickly as possible.

Mingo County is not alone in having difficulty filling these positions, as numerous other counties in West Virginia are posting for these positions as well.

Gilbert High Head Football Coach Gordon Carter said this was a continuing problem that most area football teams have and will continue to face.

“Until our county pays these people more than $1,000.00, we’re not going to be able to keep these people. “ Carter said. These people have special certifications and since everybody in the state needs them and is looking for them, they can be particular about where they work.”
