WILLIAMSON - The calendar continues to approach the WVSSAC appointed dates for out-of season coaching and conditioning activities for West Virginia high school and middle school athletes and as it does, many Mingo County Schools still find themselves with coaching vacancies.
The Mingo County Board of Education currently has posted a total of five head coaching vacancies, three high school athletic trainer vacancies and twenty one-zero-compensation assistant coaching vacancies. The vacancies affect seven schools.
Four of the five head coaching vacancies are middle school positions. The lone high school vacancy is the Tug Valley High School Head Football Coaching position which remains vacant in the wake of the resignation of former head coach Mike Smith.
The Tug Valley football position was posted once already with only two known to have interest. However, the position has now been re-posted.
Tyler Hodge, the head coach of last year’s Mingo Middle School Football Champion Kermit Blue Devils had told the Daily News he was indeed going to apply. However, Hodge said he reconsidered his decision when he became aware that a teacher in the system was considering applying for the position.
“He was a teacher and I knew he’d get it over me. But I did re-apply at Kermit.” said Hodge. “I got a lot of support at Kermit last year and I know the Principal there supports the football program really well. Several businesses and other people have stepped up to the plate to support us there the program, so I’m ready to defend the county championship we won last year.”
Thus the TVHS position is reposted.
