WILLIAMSON — The Mingo County Commission (MCC) and Mingo County Office of Emergency Services (OES) issued a reminder Tuesday that public assistance briefings will be held for public utilities and mayors of towns affected by the May 9 flooding in the county.

Two briefings will be held Wednesday, May 27. The first briefing is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the Larry Joe Harless Center in Gilbert. The second is set for 2 p.m. at the Williamson Fire Department.

Relief centers located at the Baisden and Wharncliffe volunteer fire departments are now closed. Residents in those service areas needing supplies may receive them at the Larry Joe Harless Center. The last day to obtain supplies from county-operated relief centers will be Friday, May 29. Cleaning supplies and other items will still be available by request through the county commission office while supplies last.

OES Director Jarrod Fletcher wants to remind residents of pending deadlines to register for disaster relief assistance. Residents impacted by flooding must first register with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). They may register by calling 1 (800) 621-3362, TTY 1 (800) 462-7585. Residents whose property has been affected by eroded creek banks and other stream damage are reminded that June 5 is deadline for filing applications for assistance with these problems. Applications can be filed by calling 1 (866) 823-5663.

Residents who register with FEMA will receive Small Business Administration (SBA) applications for low-interest loans. The deadline to apply for SBA assistance is July 14. For more information about SBA assistance, call 1 (800) ASK-SBA and 1 (800) 659-2955.
