RED JACKET – The Mingo Central Miners football team has been laboring through the 3-week summer workout sessions the past few days.

Coach Yogi Kinder and his staff have had about 50 players out for weight lifting, conditioning and other drills.

The team has also participated in a couple of 7-on-7 sessions against other teams. On Thursday they traveled to Scott to play 7-on-7 against the Skyhawks and Logan.

Last week they participated in a 7-on-7 session with Poca, Chapmanville and Sissonville.

Kinder’s team will be relatively young this season, but he does return a couple of all-state candidates from last year’s squad. They are 6-1, 240 pound linebacker Drew Kirk, who led the team in tackles last season and Alex “Booger” Lee, a 6-3 wide receiver, who also plays defensive back. Lee also punts and returns kickoffs.

Sophomore Stevie Hammond will return from a back injury. He will be one of the players vying to take over at quarterback. The other is newcomer Tyler Jude.

Speedsters Deonte Joplin and Dakweon Willis, along with Chance Lester should help on both offense and defense this season.

Kinder said the off season weight program is very important because his team does not have a lot of size on the line.

The Miners open up on Friday, August 30 playing host to Wyoming East.

Mingo Central’s Buck Harless Stadium will host the first-ever Cardinal Conference Football Grid-o-rama on Saturday, Aug. 17. All eight league teams are scheduled to scrimmage that day.
