Born November 29, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Floyd and Virgie Davis Cline.
Opal was a precious daughter, sister, loving wife, devoted mother, mother-in-law, aunt, a doting grandmother, proud great grandmother, and friend. She was a wonderful homemaker and a retired school cook. Opal was an active member of the Rosa Old Regular Baptist Church for over 47 years. She never met a stranger and welcomed everyone into her home with a big smile.
Opal was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, William Howard Sammons, and a grandson, Jason Brett Sammons. She was also preceded in death by her brothers Dewey Cline, Elmer Cline, Elliott “Bud” Cline, Edward Cline, Johnny Cline, Lawrence Cline, and Jason Cline and her sisters Stella Trent, Lenora Solano, Lydia Justice, and Blonnie Dotson.
Those left to cherish her memory are her four devoted sons: Tom Sammons and his wife Betty of Chattaroy, W.Va.; Terry Sammons and his wife Penny of Gilbert, W.Va.; Scotty Sammons of Baisden, W.Va. and his fiancee Elaine; and Drexel Sammons and his wife Ann of Beckley, W.Va. She was also a mother to Faye Testerman of Baisden; and Roy Sammons of Smith Mountain, Va. Her surviving sisters are Mary Cline and Naomi Cline of Mohawk, W.Va.; and Nealie Cline of North Spring, W.Va. Other survivors include her grandchildren: Allyson Hedges, William Howard Sammons, II, Olivia Johnson, Amanda Meadows, Brandon Sammons, and Sarah Beth Sammons; her great-grandchildren: Savannah Belcher, Will Sammons, Connor Sammons, Katie Johnson, Benjamin Hedges, Isaac Meadows, and Branson Sammons, and two previous daughter-in-laws Gracie Moore and Debbie Shannon as well as a host of other dear family and friends.
Services will be held on Saturday, April 11, 2009, at 1 p.m., at the Rosa Old Regular Baptist Church with Elders Hobart Hamilton, Richard Staten, and Gary Young officiating. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday, April 10, 2009 at the church from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Burial will follow at the Old Oak Log Cemetery at Baisden, W.Va. Pallbearers will include Brandon Sammons, William Howard Sammons, II, Chris Hedges, Kurt Meadows, James Lester, Chris Johnson, Frankie Cline, and Jackie Thompson. Honorary pallbearers will include Lanny Cline, Ernest Sammons, Charles Testerman and Clarence Trent.
Flowers are welcome. The family suggests that any memorial contributions be given to the Rosa Old Regular Baptist Church of Baisden, W.Va.
