PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Former Belfry High School basketball coach Randy Casey has been hired by Kelly Wells as an assistant coach for the University of Pikeville basketball program.
Last week, Casey resigned from his head coaching position at Belfry High School.
“This is a great opportunity and I’m excited about it,” Casey said while in Pikeville on Friday. “We’ve been friends since college.”
“I”m ecstatic to get the chance work with Kelly,” Casey added. “I’m thrilled to get the chance to coach at the collegiate level. Coach Wells has a good program over here. I want to help them win another national championship. He has one ring, I would like to get a championship ring too.”
“I’m very excited about this addition to our program,” UPike head coach Kelly Wells said. “He and I go back many, many years. He was in my wedding.”
“Randy will help us with our low post players. He will be a big asset and will really help us in practice and with player development,” Wells added.
“We had talked about this for about 10 years,” Wells said. “It is something we’ve worked on and now he will join our staff.”
Casey will also help with recruiting in the local area.
“I look forward to the opportunity to work with someone that I have been friends with for a long time,” Wells concluded. “He will be a huge asset to our program.”
Casey had served as head coach of the Pirates for nine years. He had been an assistant at Belfry for 15 years before becoming head coach.
Casey started out as an assistant under former head coach Raymond Justice, then served as an assistant to David Hatfield and Jason Booher, before being named head coach for the Pirates.
He had a record of 150-101 with nine straight 15th regional tournament appearances. During that time he won three 60th District titles and he took his team to the semi-finals of the regional tourney three times.
Casey will remain as a history teacher at Belfry High School. So he will have to work out his schedule between Belfry and Pikeville for practices and games.
During his time as head coach Casey was named as KABC Coach of the Year for the 15th Region, he was named WYMT Coach of the Year and was also named coach of the year by the Williamson Daily News and News Express in past seasons.
His best record at BHS was back in the 2006-07 season when his squad finished with a 24-8 record.
