RED JACKET – Without a home field to call their own, the Mingo Central High School baseball team hopes to build a winning program.

Roger Staton has been named interim head coach – filling in for Walt Cline, who took a medical leave of absence.

He is being assisted by Bob Huff.

The two hope to play some of the Miner’s home games at historic Lefty Hamilton Park in West Williamson. Last year MCHS played at the Gilbert field.

Being in the strong Cardinal Conference makes for a tough schedule for Mingo Central, according to Staton. But, he hopes his team will get better as the season progresses.

Like most teams in the area, the cold, wintry wet weather has made it difficult for the team to practice outside. Mingo Central plans to play some games at the old Lefty Hamilton Park. That field still needs some work to be ready for them to play. The Miners hosted Sissonville for one game at the historic facility.

The squad has mostly practiced inside at the MCHS gym during March.

They were able to practice a couple of times on the Matewan field, according to Huff.

The Miners do not return many starters from last year. The first team Mingo Central fielded in the consolidation year was full of seniors who have moved on.

Senior Matt Lester returns this season. He is an infielder and can also pitch. Junior Alex “Booger” Lee returns as the catcher. He saw some action last season.

Senior speedster Joe May is also a returning player. May will start in the outfield and see some action on the mound.

Senior Garth Simpkins, who saw some playing time last spring, will also pitch and play at first base.

The squad is winless so far this season, but once they get outside for some practice, hopefully that will change. Players will be moved around in different positions depending on who is pitching.

Other members of the squad are juniors Mitch Bobbera and Jacob Meade, seniors Harold Adams, Eli Cisco, Mason Conley, Trevor Porter and B. J. Warden.

Some of the younger players are sophomores Seth Collins, John Newcomb, Todd Slone, Caleb Spencer and Logan Wakham. Freshmen on the squad are Chase Bentley, Tyler Harrison, Cameron Hatfield and Devin Poe.
