Take back Mingo County

Dear editor:

I was raised in Matewan, and just this past weekend, Easter weekend, spent four or five days there visiting and working on the house. I generally follow the Williamson Daily News via internet from my home in South Carolina.

I am saddened to read that Sheriff Eugene Crum was violently gunned down in Williamson on Wednesday. Over the years Mingo County has become a drug ridden, welfare check, poorly educated, infested area. Sheriff Crum saw the need to clean the place up and rid the law abiding citizens of the lazy leeches that have attached themselves to the area.

I only hope that the elected officials, and those that follow in his footsteps continue the work he has started.

It is remarkable what that man accomplished in such a short time and most of the respected residents there were cheering for him. Some congratulated him outwardly while others most likely were afraid to speak out in public.

The citizens need to speak out and stand for what is right.

They need to support the local police department, deputy sheriffs and state police in their efforts to crack down on illegal activities and take back Mingo County.

One man can not do this alone, it takes an entire community and guts to see this through and by doing so, Sheriff Crum will be memoralized forever as a great sheriff who started the take back of Mingo County.
