BAISDEN — A Baisden woman was placed under arrests on multiple counts after a traffic stop was initiated by West Virginia State Police (WVSP) Trooper J.R. Tupper for reasons of defective equipment.

Adrianne M. Mangus, 27, was charged with DUI; child neglect with risk of injury; no proof of insurance; expired registration; expired MVI; defective equipment; possession of a controlled substance; providing false information to DPS; and prohibited receipt of a drug.

According to the police report, Trooper Tupper observed a Pontiac Grand Prix traveling westbound on County Rt. 13 with a defective tail light. The officer initiated a traffic stop after the vehicle made a turn down a dirt road located next to the Baisden Fire Department. After approaching the driver, the trooper stated she spoke with a slurred speech. When asked to provide proof of registration and insurance, the defendant was unable to do so. A three-part standardized field sobriety test was administered to Mangus, which she failed to complete. The defendant’s three-year old son was in the back seat of the vehicle. The trooper further observed that the accused had attempted to conceal a straw containing crushed pill residue beneath the driver’s side door of the car.

When questioned as to why she had turned off the highway onto the dirt road, Mangus stated that she was attempting to travel to see a friend that lived in that location, however; the friend had no knowledge of her visit. The trooper documented in the complaint his belief was the defendant had attempted to conceal her vehicle from him to avoid an arrest. A prescription only medication (not a narcotic) was found inside the car, which Mangus did not have a valid prescription for.

The defendant was arraigned before Mingo County Magistrate Pam Newsome and was later released from custody after meeting the requirements and stipulations of her bond.
