Tug Valley seniors will play final home game
NAUGATUCK – They say that time flies and for Tug Valley basketball players Mikey Newsome, Austin Brewer and Aaron Muncy, that probably seems ever so true.
The three returning starters from last year’s Class AA state championship team will be playing in their final home game at the TVHS gym on Thursday night.
Along with fellow senior Corey Dillon, the four seniors will help the Panthers take on Greenbrier West in the co-championship game of the Class A, Region 3 tournament.
“They have added to the rich tradition of Tug Valley basketball,” said head coach Garland “Rabbit” Thompson. “They have helped with our home court winning streak.”
Tug Valley has won 31 straight home games and hopes to add one more Thursday night. That win will put the Panthers back into the state tournament next week in Charleston.
“They had good careers and have done well for themselves,” Thompson added. “Mikey and Austin are also honor students and do well in the classroom.”
Both have received interest from college coaches and are likely to continue playing after graduation.
“I’m going to hate losing them to graduation,” Thompson said. “Austin has started for three years and Mikey started two seasons – and also started some when he was a sophomore.”
Muncy started last year and all four have played many games since their freshmen seasons on the hardwood at Naugatuck.
They have played together for several years dating back to Buddy League, AAU and on middle school teams.
Muncy is a steady player and does a lot of the little things that sometimes go unnoticed in the box score.
Brewer is averaging over 15 ppg. and dishes out seven assists. He also helps hit the boards and many times gets double figures in rebounds.
Newsome, known for his 3-point shooting, is averaging over 17 ppg.
Dillon, who didn’t play last season, returned to the team this year and has contributed to the low post play for the Panthers.
“They have had a lot of success in their careers,” Thompson concluded. He and the Tug Valley fans hope the seniors add to their legacy.
Tug Valley had a goal to win back to back state titles. They are close to achieving that objective.
