MCDC offering shopping education

The Mingo County Diabetes Association (MCDC) is hosting a series of hands-on tours to help area families learn how to make healthy choices on a limited budget.
The tours, called Shopping Matters, will demonstrate how to compare unit prices, purchase fruits and vegetables on a budget, compare food labels and choose whole grains.
The tours will take place at the South Williamson Walmart Monday, Feb. 11, and at Food City Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 18 and 19. Tours will begin at 11 a.m. and last roughly 90 minutes.

Mingo County has one of the highest rates of diabetes in West Virginia, third of any county in the state’s 55 counties, after McDowell and Logan Counties.
The prevalence of diabetes in Mingo County is 13.7 percent, directly affecting approximately 1680 residents, as compared with 10.8 percent statewide and 8.6 percent nationally. The adult obesity rate in Mingo County, WV was 35.3 percent in 2007
“I’m hoping for a good turnout,” Whitt said. “I know the need in this community is to be both healthy and stay within a budget. The program teaches new tricks to save money, and I am eager to see the reaction of participants when they realize they can do that.”
Shopping Matters is a national program sponsored by ConAgra Foods. It is based on research that shows that careful food shopping practices, such as price comparisons and nutrition label use, are measures of dietary quality.
Carolyn Pinson, a MCDC volunteer, said the information she has received through the Coalition is already helping her live a healthier lifestyle.
“I am a newly diagnosed diabetic who has recently been educated on what to eat, and what not to eat through the diabetes clinic in Williamson,” Pinson said. “I am glad I have been able to receive this information because eating healthy is important as a diabetic. I am very excited to see what else I will learn.”
Cooking Matters has served more than 10,000 families each year since 1993, led by expert culinary and nutrition volunteers who teach how to select good tasting and low cost ingredients, stretch them across multiple meals and use healthy cooking techniques that help participants provide the best nourishment possible.
