The Tug Valley Panthers braved the snowy weather on Friday night and so did many of their fans as they traveled to the Logan Memorial Fieldhouse to take on top ranked Greenbrier East.

Rondale Watson hit a half-court shot at the buzzer to beat the Panthers 63-61. Many Tug Valley fans said that Watson did not get the shot off in time. Pictures on the social media network Facebook appear to show that the basketball had not left Watson’s hands and the red light showing time had expired can be seen behind the glass backboard.

Regardless, Tug Valley came away with the loss in the Coalfield Classic.

However, the Panthers quickly bounced back on Saturday night with an easy 86-49 victory over Man.

In Friday’s game against Greenbrier East, Mikey Newsome fired in 25 points for TVHS, while Austin Brewer and Thomas Baisden each scored 12 for coach Garland “Rabbit” Thompson. Brewer handed out nine assists, while Baisden pulled down seven boards for the Panthers.

Tug Valley was 6-16 from behind the arc for 38 percent. Newsome hit four 3-pointers for TVHS. The Panthers were23-59 from the floor for 39 percent.

Tug Valley was 7-9 at the free throw line for 78 percent. The Spartans were 6-12 for 50 percent.

Watson led the Spartans with 17 points, while Bryce Woodliff had 16 and Obiora Romeo added 15 for coach Jim Justice’s squad. Watson and Romeo each pulled down 10 rebounds, while Woodliff dished out six assists.

Greenbrier East then beat Logan Saturday night 47-43.

In the game against the Hillbillies on Saturday night, Baisden poured in 19 points, Brewer 17 and Newsome 16 to lead the Panthers to the win. Aaron Muncy added eight points. Several players saw action against Man.

For the Hillbillies, they were led by John Keffer and Jake Adkins with 11 points each.
