BUCKLEYS CREEK, Ky. – The Hawks of Pike County Central defeated the Belfry Pirates 73-65 at home Tuesday night in a battle of 60th District foes at the Hawks Nest.


The game was tied 32-32 at the half, but Pike Central outscored the Pirates 18-10 in the third quarter to take an 8-point lead. The two teams each scored 23 points in the final period, but Belfry was never able to get over the hump.


The Pirates missed several free throws, some coming in the closing minutes, which could have helped them climb back into the game.


Belfry was 22-37 from the charity stripe for 60 percent. They were 21-46 from the field for 46 percent and only hit one 3-pointer.


Likewise Pike Central only connected on one 3-pointer and was 22-36 from the foul line for 61 percent. However, they were 25-54 from the filed for 46 percent.


“We weren’t ready to play. I was disappointed in the way we prepared for the game. They wanted to win more than we did. Hopefully this game was a wakeup call for our guys,” Belfry coach Randy Casey said.


Josh Robinson led Belfry with 19 points, 14 of those were in the fourth quarter. He was 8-11 at the free throw line.


Tony Messer had a game high 27 points and 10 rebounds, but 21 of those were in the first half. Brett Charles got into double figures with 16 points. Cameron Johnson scored three to round out the Belfry scoring.


Braxton Tibbs led the Hawks with 22 points and he pulled down eight rebounds. Blake Clark scored 17 points coming off the bench for PCC.


Belfry committed 17 turnovers, while Pike Central had 15 miscues.


Belfry is now 7-5 (1-1 in the district) and will play Hurricane (W.Va.) on Saturday in the Hatfield-McCoy Shootout at the Williamson Fieldhouse. The game is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.


The Hawks are now 8-8 (2-0 in the district).
