CHARLESTON —The Tug Valley Panthers are ranked 5th in the first high school boys basketball poll released this season by the Associated Press.

The Panthers (4-1), who won the Class AA state championship last season, are now in Class A. Coached by Garland “Rabbit” Thompson, Tug Valley has only lost one game. That was at Belfry during the Mountain Schoolboy Classic.

The Panthers did receive two first place votes.

Magnolia, another team that dropped from class AA to A this season, is in first place. They are followed by Charleston Catholic, Tucker County and Buffalo are tied for third, then Tug Valley comes in at No. 5.

In Class AA, Mingo Central received some votes, but did not crack the top 10. The Miners started the season off at 4-0, but have lost back to back games to Poca (No. 3), are now 4-3 overall, and 3-3 Cardinal Conference.

Scott, who edged Mingo Central a couple of weeks ago, is in first place, followed by Bluefield, Poca, Robert C. Byrd and Wyoming East. Tolsia, a team Mingo beat earlier in the season, is ranked No. 8. The Miners play host to Tolsia on Friday night.

Westside also received votes and are just ahead of Mingo Central in garnering votes.

In Class Triple A, Martinsburg is No. 1, followed by Hedgesville, South Charleston, Greenbrier East and Morgantown.
