PHELPS, Ky. – Belfry rolled over 60th District rival Phelps 74 to 30 Friday night at the McCoy Athletic Center in Phelps.


Big Tony Messer led a balanced scoring attack by the Pirates with 18 points, while Brett Charles had 14, Josh Robinson 11 and Kaleb Edwards 10 as Belfry had four players in double figures.


Belfry jumped out to a 19-9 lead after one quarter of play and led 37-20 at the half.


Zack Avina led Phelps with 19 points.


Coach Bobby Varney’s squad lost 10 seniors from last year and has struggled to a 1-10 record this season. They will take on East Ridge at home on Tuesday.


The Pirates of coach Randy Casey outscored the Hornets 37 to 10 in the second half to coast to the easy victory. They are now 7-2 on the season and traveled to Johnson Central on Saturday evening and will play host to Pikeville on Tuesday.


“I’m pleased with the play of our young guys last night,” Casey said.
