The Mingo Central Miners, fresh off of a win in their season opener, will travel up Rt. 52 tonight to take on the Tolsia Rebels.

It was a good debut win for new head coach Brad Napier.

The youthful head coach was pleased with his team’s victory, but he knows they have a lot of room for improvement.

“We need to be more consistent,” Napier said. “I thought we played good defense, but we need to be more patient on offense and take better shots.”

Napier was also pleased with the way his team rebounded against Sissonville.

The Miners played a lot of man to man defense, but Napier plans to use a full-court press when he can this season. He also mixed in some zone defense.

Seniors Austin Banks and Marqus Cunningham, along with Alex “Booger” Lee led the way for the Miners. All three players scored in double figures. Cunningham scored 15 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, while Banks scored 17 markers and Lee added 12.

Those three should get another starting assignment tonight at Tolsia. The other two spots are not solid and Napier plans to use several players in his rotation. Senior Matt Lester started at one guard in the first game.

Other players in the rotation are junior guards Julius Hatcher and Chase Hatfield, senior forwards Zack Barker, Garth Simpkins and Jason West, sophomore Mallie May and junior forward Trevor Cline.

Tolsia played Scott Friday night in their opener. (The score was not available at press time.)

The Rebels are coached by Jason Hatfield made it the the state tournament last season. They return several players from last year’s squad. They include Austin Brewer, Brandon Clark, Terry Davis and Morgan Stacy who are lettermen back this year for Tolsia.
